Alternator Voltage Readings Checker

Alternator voltage readings checker results can help separate a low battery, weak charging output, and cable resistance from a voltage change that may be normal. Enter measurements from a 12-volt system and choose the charging type when you know it.

What the Readings Can Tell You

  • Battery at rest: About 12.6 volts is a useful full-charge screen for many lead-acid batteries. The DENSO battery test procedure adds a load test because voltage alone does not prove battery capacity or health.
  • Conventional charging: The DENSO charging-system procedure uses 13 to 15 volts at about 2,000 RPM as a general screen, with the vehicle maker's specification deciding the result.
  • Computer-controlled charging: Voltage can change with battery charge, temperature, and electrical load. One GM regulated-voltage system can operate from about 12.5 to 15.5 volts.
  • Optional tests: Ripple can reveal an internal alternator problem. Voltage drop can reveal resistance in the positive or ground path.

Analyze the Charging System

Enter 0.05 volts for a 50 millivolt reading.

Take both running readings at about 2,000 RPM. For the loaded test, turn on the headlights, blower, and rear defogger when fitted.

Take Safe, Comparable Measurements

Measure directly across the battery posts with a digital multimeter set to DC volts. Keep the leads, clothing, and hands away from belts and pulleys. When checking ripple, switch to AC volts and follow the meter maker's test method. Fluke's ripple-voltage guide explains the meter setup and recommends using the battery posts when the alternator output stud is hard to reach safely.

Use Voltage Drop to Find Cable Resistance

Run cable-drop tests while the charging system is under load. For the positive side, measure from the alternator output stud to the battery's positive post. For the ground side, measure from the alternator case to the battery's negative post. The general DENSO screen is 0.20 volts or less on each path, but the correct service limit for your vehicle comes first.

Use the Result as a Test Plan

A voltage check cannot measure alternator current output or prove that the battery can hold a load. If the warning light, slow cranking, dim lights, or repeat battery drain remains, test the battery first. Then compare actual and commanded charging voltage with service information or a scan tool when the vehicle uses smart charging.
