Fuel Trim Interpreter

Fuel trim interpreter readings help show whether the engine computer is adding or removing fuel. Enter one steady snapshot from a warm engine in closed loop to combine short-term and long-term correction for each bank.

What the Readings Can Tell You

  • Positive trim means the computer is adding fuel.
  • Negative trim means the computer is removing fuel.
  • STFT reacts quickly, while LTFT represents a slower learned adjustment.
  • A difference between banks can help separate a bank-specific issue from a cause shared by the whole engine.

The combined number is a diagnostic comparison, not a separate scan-tool PID or a confirmed diagnosis. Always check your vehicle's service information before replacing a part.

Interpret a Fuel Trim Snapshot

Use values captured at the same moment. Let the engine warm up, confirm closed-loop operation, and hold the selected condition steady.

Capture Readings You Can Compare

Fuel trim changes with engine speed and load. Record a stable warm-idle snapshot, then another at a steady 2,500 RPM or road cruise. Do not compare values captured during a cold start, hard throttle movement, deceleration fuel cut, or open-loop operation. How the Combined Number Is Used

This tool adds STFT and LTFT to show the correction present in one snapshot. A result within 5 percentage points of zero is labeled near zero. The other labels help compare readings, but they are not manufacturer fault limits. Check your vehicle's service information for its normal range and diagnostic test steps.

Use the Pattern, Not One Number

  • Positive mainly at idle: Unmetered air from an intake, vacuum, or PCV leak moves higher on the check list.
  • Positive at idle and cruise: Check shared causes such as airflow measurement and fuel delivery, then test pressure against specification.
  • Negative correction: Check for excess fuel, purge flow at the wrong time, fuel-pressure problems, or biased sensor data.
  • One bank differs: Focus first on leaks, injectors, sensors, and exhaust faults that can affect that bank alone.

These patterns narrow the next test, but they do not identify a failed part by themselves. For example, a General Motors service bulletin uses changing fuel trims as one part of confirming a specific PCV vacuum leak, along with the vehicle's symptoms and a direct test.
