Find the Correct Ratios

Use the ratio for the transmission gear that is actually engaged, not the shifter label alone. Get the final-drive ratio from vehicle data, an axle tag, or service information. Four-wheel-drive vehicles normally use a direct transfer ratio on the highway, but confirm the exact value. A CVT needs its current operating ratio, which can change while speed stays steady.

How the Formula Works

Why Actual RPM Can Differ

A tire's listed size gives a nominal unloaded diameter. Inflation, tread wear, load, and construction change its rolling distance. A speedometer and tachometer can also be rounded. Automatic transmissions may run with the torque converter unlocked or with controlled slip, and some transmissions can change gear without a clear shift feel.

Do Not Diagnose Slip From Math Alone

First confirm road speed, tire revolutions per mile, commanded gear, actual ratio, and torque-converter clutch state with suitable scan data. Allowed slip varies by transmission and operating condition. A General Motors diagnostic bulletin shows that one application can use controlled slip in some gears and full lockup in other conditions. Treat its torque-converter slip examples as vehicle-specific, not a limit for every car.
